Ugandan capital Kampala bans street children donations
According to government estimates, as many as 15,000 children live on the streets in Kampala, aged from seven up to the age of 17.
Did you know that there are over 15,000 Street Children in Kampala, Uganda today of which 78% are boys and below the age of 15? According to the latest UNICEF figures the HIV/AIDS epidemic and violence have left over 3.5 million orphans in Uganda.
Uganda has the world’s youngest population with over 78 percent of its population below the age of 30. With just under eight million youth aged 15-30, the country also has one of the highest youth unemployment rates in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Our organization Bridges of Grace responded to that situation by partnering with the Sendi Ian Foundation, a Ugandan based nonprofit to ensure that such vulnerable Children and communities have the support they need to build their own future filled with hope, and we do this by running a series of fundraising events to help the foundation with the needed resources to do their work.
Through our Vision Partner, the Sendi Ian Foundation, we are able to ensure that vulnerable Children in the City of Kampala, Uganda have the support they need to build their own future filled with hope, and we wouldn’t have done it without all your financial support and prayers. Officials, experts seek reopening of schools as teenage pregnancies pose health, economic risks across Uganda
“It was violent. Even the way they were handled. They grabbed them. And they were shouting at them: ‘Why are you on the street?’” said Martin Baliko, who runs Amari Uganda, a Kampala based organization that rehabilitates street-children. A newspaper also ran a photograph of a policeman and a member of a the Local Defence Unit, a paramilitary group, dragging a child away during the operation.
