When Truth Calls Us Home

Understanding God’s Foundation for Life

There are moments in life when we realize that what we need most is not more noise, more opinions, or even more activity. We need something steady. We need something strong enough to hold us when life becomes confusing, painful, or uncertain. We need truth.

In a world filled with many voices, it can be easy to lose our way. Culture speaks. Pain speaks. Fear speaks. Social media speaks. Our own desires speak. And if we are not careful, even those of us who love God can slowly drift — not because we have fully rejected Him, but because something else has become louder than His Word.

That is why this first message in our series, Finding Our Way Back to Truth, begins with one of the most important questions ever asked.

In John 18, Jesus stands before Pilate after being betrayed, arrested, and falsely accused. Pilate has earthly power, yet Jesus stands with peace, clarity, and authority. As Pilate questions Him about His identity and His kingdom, Jesus says, “For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth.”

Then Pilate asks, “What is truth?”

That question is still alive today. It is being asked in homes, churches, schools, relationships, communities, and in the quiet places of the human heart. Is truth what I feel? Is it what culture accepts? Is it what benefits me? Is it what makes me comfortable? Or is there a truth that stands above all of us?

The answer matters because truth is not only a religious idea. Truth is the foundation for life. It shapes what we believe about God, how we see ourselves, how we understand sin, how we love people, how we handle pain, how we make decisions, and how we walk with purpose.

When the foundation is weak, everything built on it becomes unstable. But when our lives are built on the truth of God, we can stand even when the world around us keeps shifting.

Truth does not begin with our feelings, our pain, our background, our culture, or our opinions. Truth begins with God. Psalm 119:160 says, “The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.” Jesus also prayed in John 17:17, “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.”

God’s Word is not just a collection of helpful thoughts or religious suggestions. It is the foundation beneath our feet, the light on our path, and the voice that calls us back when we have wandered.

And this is good news, because a loving Father does not leave His children without direction. He does not watch us walk into darkness and remain silent. He speaks, corrects, guides, and restores. God tells us the truth because He loves us too much to let lies destroy us.

Sometimes truth comforts us. It reminds us that God is with us, that His grace is sufficient, that His mercy is new every morning, and that He will never abandon His children. But truth also corrects us. It shows us where our hearts have become proud, where our choices have become careless, where bitterness has taken root, and where fear has been leading us.

That kind of correction is not always easy, but it is love.

A doctor who refuses to tell the truth cannot help a patient heal. A parent who refuses to correct cannot help a child grow. A shepherd who refuses to warn cannot protect the sheep. Truth is not the enemy of love; truth is part of love.

Jesus came full of grace and truth. In Him, grace and truth walk together perfectly. Grace welcomes us, and truth leads us into freedom. Grace reminds us that we are loved, and truth calls us to be changed. Grace tells us there is forgiveness, and truth teaches us not to return to the chains that wounded us.

When Pilate asked, “What is truth?” he did not realize that Truth was standing right in front of him. Jesus was not only a teacher of truth; He was truth in human flesh. In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.”

So when we speak about finding our way back to truth, we are not simply returning to religious ideas. We are returning to Jesus — the One who knows us completely and still loves us deeply, the One who exposes sin but also offers mercy, the One who does not flatter us but faithfully saves us.

Truth has a name, and His name is Jesus.

This message is an invitation to come home. Not with shame. Not with fear. Not with condemnation. But with humility, hope, and faith.

Maybe there are places where you have slowly drifted. Maybe there are lies you have quietly believed. Maybe there are areas where your feelings have led you more than God’s Word. Maybe there are places where you need to come back to what is true.

The good news is that the Father is not waiting to embarrass you. He is waiting to receive you.

Truth is not a prison. Truth is a pathway home.

And when we return to truth, we return to Jesus.

Reflection Question

What truth is God calling you back to today?

Take a quiet moment before the Lord. Ask Him to show you where you need His Word to guide you, correct you, heal you, and lead you home.

Closing Prayer

Father, in the name of Jesus, bring us back to Your truth. Where we have been confused, give us clarity. Where we have believed lies, set us free. Where we have drifted, lead us home. Where we have resisted correction, give us humble hearts. Teach us to love Your Word, trust Your voice, and follow Jesus, who is the way, the truth, and the life. Build our lives on what cannot be shaken. Amen.

When We Trade Truth for Our Own Way

In Part 2 of Finding Our Way Back to Truth, Ian Sendi reflects on Romans 1:18–25 and the danger of suppressing what God has already revealed. This message invites us to stop trading God’s truth for our own way and return with humility to the grace that calls us home.
